Tongariro National Park

Tongariro was the first national park to be established in New Zealand and the fourth in the world. This stunning wilderness is a dual World Heritage area, recognising the area’s important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its amazing natural attributes.

Skiing and Snowboarding on Mount Ruapehu

Three world class ski areas are just 40 minutes drive from Turangi Kiwi Holiday Park, on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu.  Whakapapa is the more established ski area with beginners slopes and extensive facilities. Turoa is an established ski area specialising in snowboarding. Tukino is based on the Eastern slopes, offering a less commercialised experience.

Fishing

Lake Taupo is world famous for all year round fishing for Rainbow and Brown trout in the lake and its tributaries.

Rafting

Local Turangi rafting operators offer trips down the renowned Tongariro River that range from easy rafting near Turangi to more exciting whitewater in the foothills of the Kaimanawa ranges.  Beautiful volcanic cliffs, crystal clear water and fun-filled rapids make this a great river experience. Relax between the rapids, which are generally grade 3 boulder gardens, and catch a glimpse of rainbow trout in the pools.

The Tongariro National Trout Centre

Four kilometres south of Turangi on State Highway 1, the Tongariro National Trout Centre offers a visitor centre with a full education program for schools run by the Department of Conservation. The main aim of this program is to raise awareness of the importance and value of the Taupo trout fishery and freshwater conservation in New Zealand.

Turangi Walks

There are a number of beautiful bush walks of varying length to enjoy in the Turangi area. Hikes take in the Tongariro River, Lake Taupo and mountain and forest scenery.
