Local Attractions In The Turangi Region

Fishing Great Lake Taupo

The Best Trout Fishing in the World!

On the doorstep of Turangi Holiday Park is the Tongariro River which is one of the top Fly Fishing rivers in New Zealand. Rainbow and Brown Trout are available all year round.

The river is a mixture of deep pools, long runs and boisterous rapids. During the popular winter fishing season, most anglers prefer to fish the pools and runs where fish often rest as they move upstream to reach the spawning beds.

Tongariro National Trout Centre

Tongariro National Trout Centre

A must see tourist destination, the Tongariro National Trout Centre was established in 2003 by a collective of Turangi volunteers and the Department of Conservation at an existing trout hatchery site, the iconic Trout Centre lets visitors view and feed wild rainbow trout in their native environment. An underwater viewing chamber also brings visitors up close and personal to the fish and allows close inspection of their spawning and feeding rituals.

The River Walk, a classic angling museum comparable to any in the world, mimics the path of a river and its many displays and video presentations provide an educational opportunity to explore the history of the area’s angling and the ecology of the Taupo fishery. Surrounded in native bush, the Trout Centre provides an authentic taste of New Zealand bush, fish, and birdlife.
