The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of New Zealand's most popular walks through the Tongariro National Park. The hike takes 6 to 8 hours and features a variety of impressive volcanic terrain. It is designated one of the ‘Great Walks’ by the New Zealand government’s Department of Conservation. Turangi is one of the closest towns to embark on this walk. Three world class ski areas are just 40 minutes drive from Turangi Kiwi Holiday Park, on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu. Whakapapa is the more established ski area with beginners slopes and extensive facilities. Turoa is an established ski area specialising in snowboarding. Tukino is based on the Eastern slopes, offering a less commercialised experience.
